Every new year brings with it new beginnings and new opportunities. It gives you a chance to set your sights on something fresh and new. It also gives you a chance to reflect on the previous year and ask yourself the following:

  • What did I aim to achieve last year? What were my goals?
  • What did I achieve and how did I achieve it?
  • What didn’t I achieve and why didn’t I achieve it?
  • What will I do differently this year and how will I do this?

Reflection

It’s great to have your sights set on the road ahead but it’s also important to understand what you did before. You can then use the wisdom to make the most of your year ahead. As Vern McLellan says, “What the new year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the new year.”

Planning

It’s important to create a clear picture of how you want the year ahead to pan out. To do this, you need to look at each area of your life and identify what you want to achieve. By breaking each area down, it becomes easier for you to map out your year.

If you want to make the most of anything, including the year ahead, then you have to plan. You’ll only reach your goal or destination if you’re intentional about where you’re going and how you’ll get there. The key to getting this right is to identify and schedule your priorities, rather than wait on someone else to do this for you. If you don’t decide what’s important to you, somebody else will.

Mindset

A different outcome needs a different way of thinking and behaving. If you want this year to be different, you’ll also need to shift your mindset. Leila Kashani reminds us that “Your mindset can control you, or you can control it. It can reward you, or it can own you. You get to decide. What are you choosing?”

If you want this to be your year, if you want it to be different, then you have to decide to make it different. Actively pursue opportunities around you. Focus on the important things that you need to do and do them consistently. Discard the things that are holding you back from achieving your goals. Break old habits. Build new (positive) ones. Be the creator of your best year.
